Advertising Pixel

A pixel is browser-side tracking code that records defined website events and sends eligible event data to an analytics or advertising system.

Definition

Pixels can observe events such as page views, product views, add-to-cart actions, checkout steps, and purchases when they are correctly installed and permitted to run. Browser restrictions, consent choices, ad blockers, network failures, implementation errors, and identity limitations can reduce observed coverage. Pixel data should therefore be treated as an evidence source rather than a perfect record of every visitor action.

What to remember

  • A first-party pixel and an ad-platform pixel can have different purposes.
  • Observed events are not automatically proof that an ad caused the event.
  • Consent and privacy requirements depend on jurisdiction and implementation.
