Blended ROAS for Shopify: Formula, Scope, and Common Mistakes
Blended ROAS can give a useful high-level paid-growth view, but only when store revenue and the included ad-spend total refer to the same period and known scope.
Define blended ROAS before publishing it.
In ecommerce, blended ROAS often means store revenue divided by total paid-media spend across included channels. That makes it mathematically similar to a common definition of MER. Other teams use different revenue or cost scopes, so the dashboard should state the exact formula.
The numerator and denominator should cover the same date range, compatible currency basis, and intended business scope. A partial denominator makes the ratio look stronger than it is.
Blended does not mean attribution solved.
Blended ROAS avoids double-counting provider-attributed revenue because it can use one store-side revenue numerator, but it still does not tell you what caused each order. Organic, returning, email, affiliate, direct, and offline effects can all contribute to revenue while paid spend sits in the denominator.
Use blended ROAS as an operating efficiency trend. Use channel and entity analysis to diagnose movement, and use incrementality methods if the question is causal lift.
Watch for three silent errors.
First, a disconnected ad account can remove spend without removing store revenue. Second, cross-currency accounts can make arithmetic meaningless without an explicit FX basis. Third, changed refund or revenue definitions can make historical comparisons inconsistent. A reliable analytics system should flag those situations.
- Incomplete provider or account coverage.
- Mixed currencies without a defined conversion basis.
- Inconsistent revenue/refund definitions across periods.
FAQ
Questions this guide should answer
Is blended ROAS the same as platform ROAS?
No. Platform ROAS usually uses provider-attributed conversion value. Blended ROAS commonly uses store revenue and spend across multiple paid channels.
Is blended ROAS the same as MER?
Often, but not always. Teams use the terms differently, so define the numerator and denominator on the page or report.
Can I calculate blended ROAS with only Meta connected?
You can calculate a Meta-only store-revenue-to-Meta-spend ratio if clearly labeled, but it should not be presented as complete blended paid-media efficiency if other paid channels exist.
